Create Jira automation rules for incident management

10 min
Intermediate

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Explore use cases to meet complex business requirements
  • Create an automation rule that creates a bug for an incident
  • Create an automation rule that automatically adds watchers to bugs
  • Create an automation rule that sends Slack messages about newly created bugs

Automatically create bugs from incidents

If your organization uses Jira Service Management for incident management on the same site that you use Jira for development, you can easily automate bug creation from Jira Service Management incidents. You’ll build this rule in the relevant Jira Service Management project.

This rule applies to two projects, so you must be mindful of permissions. The rule’s actor must have the Browse Project, Create Work Items, Link Work Items, and Create Attachments permissions in the Jira project and the Browse Project and Link Items permission in the Jira Service Management project.

Automatically add watchers to newly created bugs

You may want to automatically add watchers to your high-impact bugs, cross-platform incidents, or many other situations.

Automatically notify the team in Slack about bugs

There are many ways to integrate Slack (or other messaging apps) and Jira. One of the easiest ways is to set up automation rules for notifications.
