Customize card layouts for a Jira board

5 min
Intermediate

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Display important fields on cards
  • Differentiate the layout for work items and the card layout

Configure the work item card layout

Board admins can configure the card layout to add extra fields to cards on their board. This allows users to easily see more information without opening each card individually.
👇 This card shows the story point estimate, start date, and due date.

You can add up to three fields to both the backlog and board views. The fields can be different for each view.
To configure the card layout:
  1. Open your board.
  2. Next to the board name, select More actions (represented by •••), then Board settings.
  3. In the sidebar, select Layout, then Card layout.
  4. You can select up to three fields to appear in the board and backlog sections, either the same or different ones. You can also configure if the days a work item has been in a board column appears on its card.

Let's look at an example!

Suki’s team wants to be able to plan and manage their work without opening each work item to view relevant information.
On the board, the team wants to see Approvers, Fix versions, and Labels to help them keep on top of their current work.
In the backlog, they’d like to see Components, the Original estimate, and the Due Date to help them prioritize what to work on next.

Compare card layout and the layout for work items

Your card layout determines what fields appear on work item cards on the board or in the backlog. Your layout for work items, usually configured by the project admin, determines what fields appear when a user opens a work item or request.
👇This is the layout for work items in Jira.

Users may not populate a field with information if a field isn’t in the layout for that work item. Therefore, you wouldn’t want to use it in the card layout, as it would be empty. Work with your project admin to add useful fields to the layout for work items.
