10 min
Intermediate
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:
- Read and understand the Velocity Chart
- Track the amount of work completed from sprint to sprint
- Describe how the Velocity Chart can benefit your team
What is the Velocity Chart?
The Velocity Chart tracks the amount of work completed from sprint to sprint. This helps you determine your team's velocity and estimate the work your team can realistically achieve in future sprints.
👇 Here’s an example of a Velocity Chart.
The Velocity Chart is available to scrum teams in a team- or company-managed project. There are small differences between the two, but they generally show the same information.
Use the Velocity Chart:
- When you want to get an idea of how quickly your team can work through the backlog.
- During a sprint planning meeting, when you want to know how much work your team can realistically commit to completing.
- When you want to visualize your team's productivity over several sprints.
It's important to monitor how velocity evolves over time. New teams can expect to see an increase in velocity as the team optimizes relationships and the work process.
Your team can use the Velocity Chart to:
✔ Make safe, accurate commitments. When a team knows how much work they can actually commit to completing, it helps them feel productive and happy.
✔ Highlight team wins. Being able to see how much work your team is completing over time can be a great reason to celebrate!
✔ Make informed decisions on other projects. Knowing your team's average velocity can help you determine deadlines for a new epic or cleaning out the backlog.
