Set your personal notifications in Jira
5 min
Beginner
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:
- Configure your personal notification settings in Jira
View your notifications in Jira
The easiest way to manage your notifications is by clicking the notifications icon (represented by a bell) in the main navigation bar of any Atlassian product. If your Atlassian products are connected, you’ll see notifications across all products here.
👉 For example: If your company connects Jira and Confluence, you’ll see notifications for activity in Confluence from the notifications menu in Jira, and vice versa.

You can see both notifications for when you’ve been mentioned directly, or when activity has happened on work you’re watching. You can show or hide unread messages, or even open your notifications in a new tab, if that’s easier for you to manage.
Personalize your email preferences
Jira's default email settings are all-inclusive. You get emails for nearly any change in the work item. Each email has a direct link to the work item, making it easy to see and respond.
In your personal settings, you can change the volume of emails you receive. If you prefer to receive fewer emails, uncheck the boxes for activities you're not interested in. You can always come back to your settings and update preferences as you wish.
👇Here’s where you can configure your notifications.
To configure your notification settings:
- In Jira, in the top-right corner, click Settings (represented by a gear icon).
- Under Personal settings, select Notification settings.
- Check or uncheck any of the checkboxes to determine if you receive notifications about:
- Work item assignments
- Work item mentions
- Work item changes
- Comments
- Worklogs
- Other events
If emails become unwieldy, try setting up an email filter. Most email services have a filtering feature. You can filter emails received from jira@<yourinstance>.atlassian.net.
Integrate Jira with your messaging tool
Jira can integrate with multiple messaging tools, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, SMS notification services, and more. This helps reduce context switching as you can either use Jira to communicate in the messaging tool, or use the messaging tool to accomplish Jira tasks.
👉 For example: In Slack, you can receive notifications about Jira according to settings configured in the Slack app. Then, some services allow you to comment on, watch, assign, and transition work you receive notifications about right in Slack. Or, you can click on message links to open work in Jira.
With some integrations, you can also create Slack channels from Jira work, or create Jira work in Slack.

You can explore the available apps in the Atlassian Marketplace, or those available through your messaging tool.
Only Jira admins can install apps in Jira. Work with your Jira admin to identify what apps would help your team work best.
